Michael Jackson had a rare skin disease called "Vitiligo". Vitiligo is a relatively rare skin disorder, in which white spots or patches appear on the skin. These spots are caused by destruction or weakening of the pigment cells in those areas, resulting in the pigment being destroyed or no longer produced. In most cases, vitiligo is believed to be an autoimmune-related disorder. Although researchers are not exactly sure what causes the autoimmune response, more is being learned every year. In vitiligo, only the color of the skin is affected. The texture and other skin qualities remain normal.

Michael never became white. If you mean what year did his skin color change, that's a hard one to answer. He was diagnosed with Vitiligo and Lupus after he was burned in the Pepsi commercial in 1984. Between then and 1987 when the Bad album was released, he'd become lighter. When Dangerous was released in 1991 he was even lighter, and again once History came out in 1995.

Michael decided to 'aid' the disease and opt for depigmentation to even out his skintone.

Michael Jackson did not want to change his skin color, he had a disease that destroyed the pigmants in his skin. It is called Vitiligo. This causes the skin to become white, starting with the hands, feet, and face, but eventually covers the entire body.

He regretted missing his childhood. Which was why he was so 'strange' as people called it when he grew older.

Like people say, he was more adult when he was a child, and more childish as an adult.

Michael did not hate being black. He was very insecure about his looks, growing up he was called "big nose" and "ugly" by his own father. As for his skin color he had a disease called vitiligo. Vitiligo is a chronic disorder that causes depigmentation in patches of skin. It occurs when the melanocytes, the cells responsible for skin pigmentation which are derived from the neural crest, die or are unable to function. The precise pathogenesis, or cause, of vitiligo is complex and not yet fully understood. There is some evidence suggesting it is caused by a combination of autoimmune, genetic, and environmental factors. It is also common in people with thyroid disorders. The population incidence worldwide is considered to be less than 1 percent.[1] Non-segmental vitiligo has a greater prevalence than the disorder's other form(s). (taken from wiki)

According to his own dermatologist Michael's case was so severe the only option was to opt for chemical depigmentation, which uses 20% monobenzone (monobenzylether of hydroquinone). This process is irreversible and generally ends up with complete or mostly complete depigmentation. (taken from wiki)

People also comment on why his hair was always "permed" or straight. Some black people like to straighten their hair, its a style choice not an identity problem. Look at other black male celebs from his same time period though. Rick James, James Brown, Ronald Isley..they just like that look.:-)

Also look at interviews from Michael Jackson (you tube) whenever asked he proclaims he is proud of his heritage.

You can't regret something you have no control over, that's like asking someone with Diabetes if they regret getting it. He had vitiligo which probably made him very self conscious and unhappy at times, it's something he couldn't stop from happening to him.
