Mount St. Helens is an active stratovolcano in the Cascade range in the state of Washington, approximately 53 miles (85 km) NE of Portland, OR.

On May 18, 1980, an earthquake marked the collapse of the north face of the mountain at 8:32 AM PDT. A violent pyroclastic explosion of magma occurred, hurling huge quantities of rock, ash and dust to the north and east. The eruption continued for more than nine hours before lessening around 5:30 PM PDT. 57 persons were directly killed, forests were flattened, and torrents of ash, mud, and debris choked the nearby rivers, destroying bridges and industry. Much of eastern Washington state was affected by the ash and dust plume.

  • September 2004, lave dome began building then subsiding, through early January 2008. See the link below for a report on this period of activity.

It is from the USGS Johnson Ridge observatory on the rim of the crater of Helen...it will give you a minute by minute update cam views as well as to whats going on up there, as well as charts anf graphs of her history. The links in the page also tell you the history of activity.

No, not by any definition. If you define the "youngest volcano" by "most recently erupted", then that honor goes to Kilauea, which has been erupting non-stop since 1983. Mount St. Helens last "erupted" in early 2008 when steam escaped from a fracture in the lava dome.
