New Years Day was already a celebrated holiday when the US declared independence, as it marks the beginning of a new calendar year. This tradition began during the Roman Empire under the Julian calendar (named for Julius Caesar). However, civil years as late as 1752 (Great Britain) were recorded as beginning on March 25.
