In 43 BC the Romans invaded and conquered Britain.
Southern England was invaded on the orders of the Emperor Claudius. It is thought that he wanted to use the glory of conquest to bolster his political position in Rome, which was shaky. The emperor Vespasian sent Agricola to conquer northern England because the main tribe there, the Brigantes, rebelled and attacked Roman positions. Agricola pushed into Scotland, but subsequently the Romans withdrew from there.
