Joseph Stalin came to power in the Soviet Union after the death of Vladimir Lenin on 21st January 1924 (N.S). He did not have sole control. He acted as part of a troika with Grigory Zinoviev and Lev Kamenev. In fact these three had been in control of the Soviet Union soon after Lenin's first stroke in 1922 at various times depending on Lenin's health. After Lenin's death, over the next several years, Stalin eliminated Leon Trotsky, Nikolai Bukharin as well as Zinoviev and Kamenev from participation in the government to become sole leader of the Soviet Union in 1929.
Stalin came into power, but certainly not sole power, after Vladimir Lenin died in 1924. Stalin was only one of five members of the Politburo of the Central Committee of the Communist Party and the Central Committee could have voted him out of office at any time if it so desired.
At first, Stalin shared power with Grigory Zinoviev and Lev Kamenev. He gradually ousted them by allying himself with Nikolai Bukharin only to oust Bukharin next. By about 1928, Stalin dominated the Politburo but did not completely control it. He became the virtual dictator around 1933 By then he had stocked the Politburo and the secret and regular police with people beholden to him so he no longer had any effective opposition.
Stalin took power in 1924, after the death of Lenin, who died of natural causes. Stalin remained the General Secretary of the CPSU ( Communist Party of Soviet Union) until his death, in 1953.
Stalin did not take full power over the Soviet Union until about 1932. Immediately after Lenin died, he shared power with Grigori Zinoviev and Lev Kamenev. He ousted them and allied himself with Nikolai Bukharin for awhile until he eliminated him too. He and the other members of the Politburo of the Central Committee of of the Communist Party the Soviet Union ruled together. Stalin still could have been voted out of the Politburo and out of power as well. Gradually he stocked the Politburo and the secret police with his allies. Once he had control of those two organs, he had total control of the government. That is when Stalin took dictatorial control over the Soviet Union.
