However isolated units and individuals were either not aware of the Emperor's Declaration or became determined to fight on. These were the Holdouts, some of whom continued the war for decades. The Japanese Army in Manchuria surrendered to the Soviets on 22 August 1945. Burma was surrendered on 27 August 1945. The Imperial Japanese surrender of the Phillipene Islands was made on 2 September 1945. Hong Kong was surrrendered on 16 September 1945. For Teruo Nakamura the war ended with his capture in Indonesia in 1974.
Fighting on the different fronts ended at different times. Perhaps the last victims of the war for the US were three Marines killed on Guam in an 8 December 1945 ambush. The German forces surrendered in Italy on the 29th of April, on the Western Front on the 7th of May, and on the Eastern Front on the 8th. In Prague, however, the remnants of the German army continued to fight until the 11th. Hitler's death did not end WWII for Germany and Japanese forces didn't all surrender on August 15th.
