Savannah was the first capitol of Georgia-it was one of the first 13 colonies, and has remained the Hostess City to the South, Georgias most historic city. Savannah is also the home of one of the largest nationally recognized historic districts, home to one of the first Racing venues in the USA, The Vanderbuilt Cup in 1911( well before racing Indianapolis and Daytona) and filmong site for no fewer than 147 popular films ranging from Forrest Gump(told from a bench in Savannahs Chipewa Square ),Swamp Thing, pretty woman, The Generals Daughter, Smokey and the Bandit, The Deep, to Wild America, and of course, Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil.
In 1795 Augusta was made the capitol to move the capitol away from the coast and allow distance to stop the ability of a quick seige and and resupply from coastal waters.
In 1868 the capitol was moved again, this time to Atlanta, to place it closer to both the geographical and population center of the state-allowing growth, representation, and protection on all sides.

∙ 12y agoWHY? I don't know. Milledgeville used to be the state capital, and Atlanta was just a small city at the end of a dead-end railroad line. Maybe because of the railroads in Atlanta? Maybe it was located on a larger river (the Chattahoochee) and that river was used (at times, not very successfully) for floating barges downstream?

∙ 6y agoIn 1868 Atlanta city officials made a bid for Atlanta to be named as the state capital. Atlanta offered suitable buildings for the legislature, the governor, other state officials, and the supreme court at no charge for ten years. Atlanta also offered land in the city for a state capitol. In view of Atlanta's recent population growth, better rail accessibility, and the offer of land and buildings, the Georgia constitutional convention voted to accept the offer and moved the capital city from Milledgeville to Atlanta. Atlanta has been the capital city of Georgia from 1868 to the present day.

∙ 13y agono, as a matter of fact it has not. Atlanta is actually Georgia's fourth capital. There were three capitals before the big city came in.
