When did codexes come into use instead of scrolls?

[Edit]

Answer

While they had been used before then, codices (codex plural) really came into use in the fourth century, and much that was not converted was lost. People started to realize the many benefits of using them instead and gradually the use of scrolls vanished.

Benefits of codices:

  • It could be opened flat to any page, which made it easier to read.
  • Writing could be done on both the front and back of the pages.
  • It was easier to transport.
  • It was more easily organized in libraries because:
  • ** It had a stable spine to write a title on.
    • Easier for them to organize them as opposed to scroll that would be stacked and were shifted around easily. Books would stay in its place regardless if the one next to it was taken out.
