Microwaves, being natural physical entities, were never "invented," rather, their presence was discovered. Microwaves are a small component of a very broad spectrum of electromagnetic fields which includes colors, UV, radio waves, and even "heat waves" (called infrared). To ask when microwaves were invented is like asking when the color blue was invented. The microwave oven was patented and produced in 1945 by Percy Spencer.

∙ 14y agoCooking food with microwaves was discovered by Percy Spencer while building magnetrons for radar sets at Raytheon. He was working on an active radar set when he noticed a strange sensation, and saw that a peanut chocolate bar he had in his pocket started to melt.
Although he was not the first to notice this phenomenon, as the holder of 120 patents, Spencer was no stranger to discovery and experiment, and realized what was happening. The radar had melted his candy bar with microwaves. The first food to be deliberately cooked with microwaves was popcorn, and the second was an egg, which exploded in the face of one of the experimenters.
On October 8, 1945 Raytheon filed a U.S. patent for Spencer's microwave cooking process and an oven that heated food using microwave energy was placed in a Boston restaurant for testing. In 1947, the company built the Radarange, the first microwave oven in the world.
