No, he was not blind, he just chose to wear dark sunglasses when performing as part of the image he portrayed. He did suffer from myopia though and had to wear glasses, but during a flight over to England from the states he lost his normal glasses and had to wear his sunglasses instead, once he did he never went back to wearing normal ones.

Roy Orbison was not blind he had myopia. I had that myself when I was a child and had to have an operation to sort it out due to me being crosseyed, my myopia was brought on by chicken pox, but Roy Orbison had this ailment from birth. He was on a flight to England when he realized he had left his prescription glasses in the states and the only glasses he had with him was his prescription sun glasses. After that they became his trademark.

He had poor vision and had to wear spectacles. The sunglasses were something of a 'trademark' look.

Roy Orbison's eyes were too close together and looked funny. For that reason he never allowed himself to be photographed without his glasses.

He also had poor eyesight.

He wasn't blind. He had to wear sunglasses on stage when he left his regular glasses on an airplane sometime in 1962 or 1963. He preferred the sunglasses -- and the image stuck.

Roy Orbison was not blind. He just wore glasses. (He left his regular, thick glasses on a plane, and was forced to wear his sunglasses. The image stuck.)

Roy Orbison had myopia (eye disease) from the time he was young and had to wear thick glasses. When he got into the entertainment business he had thick corrective lenses. Roy Orbison wore the dark glasses as a stage imagine. His son does wear glasses, but there is no mention that he has myopia.
