The Beatles landed at Kennedy Airport (recently renamed from Idlewild) in New York, where they were greeted by 3,000 screaming fans. (Many had been given free t-shirts by Capitol Records, who wanted to guarantee a big turnout, and had spent $50,000 on a promotional campaign.)
They appeared on the Ed Sullivan Show on the 9th (to a viewing audience of 73 million people), and played their first US concert on the 11th at the Washington Coliseum.
