The American Revolutionary War ended in Yorktown in 1781. There the British forces under Lord Cornwallis surrendered his army to the American rebels. Great Britain, after a long struggle with the American colonies basically gave up the struggle to keep the colonies a part of its empire. They could have kept the war going, and hindsight shows that would have been worth it.
