On Oct 7, 1943, Thursday, a bomb exploded on the southwest corner of the Post Office on Via Monteoliveto, killing 70 people---half soldiers. The Allies entered Naples at 9:30am on 1 October. When the Germans evacuated Naples, they destroyed the city water acquaducts, sewage, trains and sunk every ship and tugboat in the harbor to block its use by the Allies. They hid several bombs set to go off at a later date.

On Sunday, another bomb detonated, killing 23 engineers who fought with Darby's Rangers. The city was searched and a large bomb was disarmed. Source: "The Day of Battle" by Rick Atkinson
