The first part launched in 1998. It's not yet finished, the last module is supposed to launch in 2012.
More modules could be added in the future.
The International Space Station (I.S.S)
The cost of the International Space Station is $150 billion US dollars.
Cosmonauts typically travel to the International Space Station but in general travel to outer space.
It takes about 8 minutes from launch for the shuttle to reach space. How is that for speed? Once in space, the space shuttle and the International Space Station orbit the Earth about 16 times a day. They are actually traveling faster than a bullet! That fast rate of speed along with Earth's gravity keep them in orbit around our planet
They made the international space station, because astronauts in earth orbit, can do experiments and learn stuff, they could not do on the planet. They can study outer space more easily, when there are no clouds blocking the view. They can look down at the earth and study pollution and weather much better from outer space. A space station has more room than the 3rd stage of a Saturn V moon rocket that was used for the Skylab space station in 1973. Having people in orbit offers many opportunities that being earth bound does not.

Humans have not left outer space. The International Space Station is still crewed.

Yes, you can! Here is a link to one of the pictures NASA has from the international space station.
If you are in a space station or space suit, yes you can.

America's first satellite launched into outer space was called the Explorer 1, and was launched in 1958.
A space station is a building constructed in outer space which orbits the Earth and is usually used for scientific research.
Yes, we CAN launch a turtle into space, but you didn't ask if it will survive. It won't.
