The United States Navy is older than the United States of America, depending on how you look at it. Many European countries did not even recognize The US as a sovereign country for many years after the end of the American Revolution. But the Continental Navy was founded on October 13, 1775, which is now called the United States Navy.

I assume that this question deals with the American navy. Answer: The Colonial/Continental Navy was formed in 1775. At the end of hostilities with the British (Treaty of Paris 03September1783), the navy was disbanded. It wasn't until 1797 that the United States Navy was formed to protect American merchant ship on the "high seas" from the various aggressors of that era...and beyond.

The U.S. Navy has its origins in the Continental Navy, which was used during the Revolutionary War, to attack British interests and warships, and to defend Colonial harbors.

It did not become official until some years later when the Constitution was ratified. It is the Constitution which gives Congress the legal power to "provide and maintain a Navy."

Though its legal organization was after the Revolutionary War, the Navy and U.S. history has always considered its beginning year as 1775.

The birthplace of the US Navy occurred during the US War of Independence when Benedict Arnold built small boats to attack British ships on Lake George, NY. All of the US boats were destroyed, but, they delayed the British long enough for the colonists to win the battle.
