FM radio broadcasting started in Australia in 1947 but did not catch on and was shut down in 1961 to expand the television band and not reopened until 1975 when Australia's FM allocation was aligned with the rest of the world (Initially it was envisaged that FM broadcasting would take place on UHF but this idea was abandoned as impractical and uneconomic). During the 1980's FM broadcasting developed very slowly as many frequencies were still occupied by Television transmitters but by the 1990's these had been reallocated to other bands.

a guy called George Fiske is credited with being the first person to do a radio broadcast in Australia. He was giving a lecture at the Royal Society of New South Wales , and he played the national anthem and broadcast it from one end of the room to the other.

enthusiast and Sydney electrical engineer, Charles McLurken. his backyard operation became the first popular radio station in Australia.

CHARLES McLURKEN: I decided in 1921 to give regular transmissions every Sunday night. For some months it was the only station on the air.

1923

The Australian Government had the foresight to regulate the radio spectrum before Mr Mclurken was broadcasting but it wasn't until 1923 that radio stations started setting up for professional broadcast. The first one to air was 2SB, later to become Sydney's 2BL.

Though resulting in now significant activity, Australians experimented with FM broadcasting in the 50s and 60s. In 1972, the government recommended FM broadcasting be introduced after an inquiry. In 1975, the first licenses were given to organizations who funded themselves via subscription and air time commercials.
