Again, to simplify the answer you can say that Islam started 1400 years ago. But to be exact, Islam has started since Adam (peace be upon him) was sent down to earth, as he brought the belief that God is one, which is the fundamental thing in Islam.
Answer
Around 610, Muhammad ibn Abdullah (the Prophet), began to preach based on revelations he received. In 622 he journeyed with his followers to Yathrib (later Medina) in present day Saudi Arabia and became leader of his new community, or "umma." This inaugurated Year 1 of the Islamic Era. After more than 7 years of jihad, or holy war, against the Meccans and others who rejected his message, Muhammad and 10,000 followers were able to enter Mecca in triumph in 630. Mecca now became Islam's premier holy city, while Medina remained the political capital of the Umma.

Sarah laughed and did not believe, and soon she gave in to her insecurities, love for Abraham and her own desire to be a mother and gave her bondswoman to Abraham as concubine and she bore Abraham his first son, Ishmael.
Before long however, God kept his promise and Sarah became pregnant and bore Abraham Isaac, who would become his fathers heart; and she started to resent Hagar and her son and told Abraham to send them away, she did not want that boy sharing Isaacs inheritance. So although it broke Abraham's heart because he loved the boy, he sent them into the wilderness where they would surely have died if God had not intervened.
God made water pour from a rock in the wilderness and promised Hagar that her son would have many many descendents, like Isaac and Islam was born...
