Tsunamis have probably been occurring for millions of years and were most likely relatively commonplace in more violent eras in the earth's past.

The first recorded tsunami probably comes from The Bible - the famous flood - however science will have to prove that.

It's actually impossible to know for sure, since they have been happening for millenia, before humans ever recorded them.

A tsunami is basically a wave, usually caused by an earthquake or large amounts of debris falling into the water.

The largest recorded tsunami occurred in Alaska.

The Sumatra-Andaman earthquake on December 26, 2004 resulted in perhaps the most devastating tsunami ever recorded (also known as the Boxing Day tsunami) , the height of the wave was about 100 feet, far from the largest.

On July 09, 1958 in Lituya Bay, Alaska an earthquake measuring 8.3 on the Richter scale resulted in 40 million cubic meters of rock to fall into the sea.

As the wave swept through Lituya Bay it was forced to rise up, reaching a height of 1,720 feet or 40 feet short of a third of a mile.

Although the hillsides in the bay were devastated, the damage was very localized and as Lituya Bay is very remote, there were very few casualties.

The Lituya Bay tsunami was labeled a mega-tsunami, but it was relatively very small compared to what would happen if the big one hits.

The Western part island of La Palma, in the Canary Islands is in danger of collapsing into the sea and if it does happen it will create a true mega-tsunami.

There is no way of answering this question as some tsunamis that have occurred in ancient times were larger than the present one.

Koalabear06 sez: Ya idiot! The person who's asking this question wants to know what the biggest Tsunami currently is! If the biggest Tsunami was in ancient times, then you COULD STILL TELL THE ANSWER BY LOOKING IT UP. duhh~ But, this is the answer that the dumb person above didn't give you:

Biggest Tsunami ever: 1,720 feet tall.

Where it hit: Lituya Bay, Alaska.

Date of incident: July 9th, 1958...

Fun Fact!

- An earthquake first came and then triggered the Tsunami!

The highest tsunami ever recorded occurred in 1958 in Lituya Bay, a large inlet on the coast of Alaska. It is believed that an earthquake of either 7.9 or 8.3 on the Richter Scale, occurred along a nearby faultline, part of the Pacific Rim of Fire. Around 40 million cubic yards of dirt and glacier were shaken loose from a mountainside at the head of the Bay, resulting in a tsunami (series of waves), the highest of which reached over 5oo metres. Although the only witnesses to the event were a couple of fishing boats, the height was able to be determined by scientists finding the high water mark, where the water reached its highest point on the nearby land. However, in terms of destruction, this was not the largest tsunami. that title goes to the 2004 Boxing Day tsunami in Indomesia, the final death toll for which was almost 300,000 people.
