In 1917 The Gulf Between, which had a limited tour of Eastern cities, primarily to interest motion picture producers and exhibitors in color was the first film. However, for all practical purposes The Toll of the Sea debuted on November 26, 1922 as the first general release film to use Technicolor.

There were some color movies before these but the first real classics in color could be the 1939 releases of Gone With the Wind and The Wizard of Oz.
