Some of the first photographers were nature photographers, of necessity. Early cameras used very slow shutter speeds, and were not suitable for making photos of moving objects, so the users tended to do a lot of landscapes, where the subjects were stationary and there was plenty of light to make the exposures.

Of of the most recognized pioneers in nature Photography is Ansel Adams who lived from Feb. 20, 1902 till April 22nd, 1984. He not only was a nature photographer but an environmentalist who worked to preserve forests.

Kodak and the Brownie camera started the photography craze by making the process simpler for the average citizen (Kodak was founded in 1888 by George Eastmen).

So photography has been around since the 1800's.

The answer may depend on what method you are thinking of. Fritz Goro (1901 - 1986) began his photography career after WWII and is credited with inventing macrophotograpy. I have not delved into the subject enough to pinpoint the date of its creation or the method. Since macrophotograpy can be achieved via lens extension, reversing rings, supplementary lenses and actual macro lenses, it would require some in depth research to determine which method he used. I would expect either reversing rings, or even extension, since the use of bellows to extend lenses was already well known. The first true macro lens is thought to be the Kilfitt Makro-Kilar from the mid-fifties. See also the question on this site: When was macro photography invented?

With the discovery of light sensitive material.

Some scientist pulled a label off a bottle filled with some light sensitive liquid and noticed the difference in color of the liquid behind the label.

They started painting it onto paper and glass, focused an optical image onto it through an aperture and eventually a lens.

There's another theory on the "shroud of turin" - that it was an ancient photographic experiment.

What is your favorite type of photography?

I'm a photographer with a photography studio named Rare Studio based in Amsterdam. In my personal assessment, I find portrait photography to be my favorite genre. Portrait Photography is a compelling art form centered around capturing the unique characteristics, emotions, and personality of individuals or groups. It involves a thoughtful blend of composition, lighting, and posing to convey the essence of the subject in a visually appealing manner. The composition, including framing and background selection, is crucial in creating a harmonious and engaging portrait. Lighting, whether natural or artificial, plays a pivotal role in highlighting facial features and setting the desired mood. Skilled photographers guide their subjects to pose naturally, fostering a genuine connection and expression. The choice of focal length and framing techniques further contributes to the overall impact of the portrait. Post-processing techniques, including editing and retouching, are often employed to refine and enhance the final image. Whether capturing formal studio portraits, candid moments, or environmental portraits that provide context, portrait photography remains a powerful means of storytelling and artistic expression.
