At birth whitetail fawns have silky, reddish coats dappled with white spots. Fawns molt out of their spots and are weened by September/October. Their coats become grayish and lose their spots completely by their first winter.

∙ 8y agoUsually between 24 hours to look for food and water or avoid predators, then the mother will return and take the baby (while the mother is gone the baby fawn hides in the grass curled up in a ball). It may be well after dark before she returns. 90% of orphan calls to animal control aren't. If there isn't a dead female deer in the area, it is likely not an orphan.
