No, they don't need it. RBC are made in bone marrow and destroyed in the spleen; they pick up and drop off gases based on oncotic pressures and concentration gradients. No control or maintenance tasks are done by the cell because would require them to use the oxygen they carry there by defeating their purpose.
Red blood cells do not have a nucleus.

RBC are made in bone marrow and destroyed in the spleen; they pick up and drop off gases based on oncotic pressures and concentration gradients. No. During erythrogenesis, when the red blood cells are being made, the nucleus is broken down. The cell therefore tends to collapse in on itself, giving the familiar bi-concave shape.
