Differentiation or chemical differentiation occurs when heat and pressure are applied to a mixture of substances. For example when when you cook a cherry pie you have all the cherries and frothy stuff mixed in together and the crust is flat then you put it in the oven and apply an immense amount of heat and some pressure. When heat and pressure are applied chemical differentiation occurs and the heavy (more dense) stuff like the cherries fall to the bottom and the light (less dense) stuff rises to the top and the curst becomes wavy and bumpy. This is a process nicknamed the cherry pie effect. Same thing happened when the earth formed and that is why SiO2 or silicon dioxide (not so dense stuff) is what makes up most of the earth's continental crust and why the earth's core is made up mostly of (dense) iron and nickel.
