Controlled fusion on earth has not been achieved yet except for a brief period, less than 1 second, and this involved heating a gas plasma containing hydrogen isotopes to very high temperature, hundreds of millions of degrees, in a torus shaped device known as a tokamak. A magnetic field constrains the ionised plasma into a circular path. This type of device may be successful in the future in achieving steady fusion power, but it will take many years to develop.
