Aim, mostly. Urination for dogs is not simply a matter of getting rid of excess fluid. They use it to establish their scent within a territory.
It's to do with scent marking their territory. The further up the tree they get the bigger and therefore more poweful they appear to be to subsequent 'investigating' dogs.
