When does the Super Bowl start?

Answer:

Super Bowl XLV

Super Bowl XLV (Super Bowl 45, 2011 Super Bowl) kickoff will probably occur a little after 6:30 PM Eastern Standard Time.
  • The official Super Bowl committee site lists 5:30 Central (6:30 Eastern) as the start time), but the countdown clock on that site counts down to 5:28 Central / 6:28 Eastern.
  • 6:00 Eastern is usually the time when the broadcasting network (in this case FOX) switches from their pre-game shows to the official broadcast (though technically it's still a pre-game show).
  • Judging from past years, different official sites will list kickoff times ranging from 6:00 to 6:30 (though times ending in 8's: 6:18 and 6:28 are generally favored but actual kickoff will be at a time that nobody lists, at about 6:32.

In previous years, various sites listed various start times, usually down to the specific minute. For Super Bowl 42, FOX (which was broadcasting the game) announced kickoff for 6:17, the NFL said 6:18, and the site hosting the Super Bowl said 6:30. Actual kickoff was 6:32.

So if you'd like to catch some of the pre-game hype, turn on your TVs by 6. But don't expect the game to actually start before 6:30.

United States times by region:
6:30 p.m. Eastern
5:30 p.m. Central
4:30 p.m. Mountain
3:30 p.m. Pacific

Quick additional tidbits for Super Bowl XLV:

  • Date: Sunday, February 6, 2011
  • Location: Cowboys Stadium, Dallas Texas
  • Halftime: Black Eyed Peas
  • Super Bowl Number: 45 (XLV)
