The order of events does matter. You would want to complete the kitchen and any other big tasks before replacing wood floors & carpet. That way you won't ruin the floors by heavy traffic or doing some other sort of damage to it.

How much money should be spent on homes remodeling?

Homes remodeling can be a very expensive endeavor. Depending on what needs to be remodeled, a house remodeling can cost tens of thousands of dollars. The problem is that, many times, a remodeling job isn’t merely cosmetic: important things like electric wiring and plumbing need to be either upgraded or completely re-constructed to accommodate the remodel. The price of this kind of work quickly accumulates as these projects require licensed experts to evaluate the conditions of the current situation.Homes remodeling generally falls under two categories: a complete remodel, from floor to ceiling, or a spot remodel -- that is, the remodeling of a specific area of the house, such as the kitchen or a bathroom. A complete remodel is obviously more expensive and can be very slow; for a two-story house with four bedrooms, a complete remodel can take as long as eight months. These are generally very comprehensive, replacing fixtures, carpeting, wall paint, window moldings, and other things with more modern, higher-quality elements. They also often take place after the purchase of an older home or after some other major change, such as sending a child off to university. Because this type of homes remodeling is so invasive, it doesn’t make sense to engage in them while the household is still living in the dwelling. The second type of homes remodeling, a spot remodel, is easier to cope with while living in the house. One of the most popular types of spot remodel is the kitchen remodel, which oftentimes involves replacing appliances (refrigerator, stove, oven, etc.), adding an island, and updating the cabinets. These can be very quick -- sometimes as fast as two weeks -- and relatively inexpensive. Another popular spot remodel is the bathroom remodel, which is similarly fast and usually focuses on replacing bathroom fixtures such as the toilet, bathtub, and sink and updating wall paint or wallpaper. Spot remodels are very often completed before putting a house on the market, as the increased sale price can more than cover the cost of a remodel in many cases -- especially with the kitchen, which is the focal point of many homes.

Kitchen Remodeling?

Homeowners seek to remodel their kitchen for a variety of reasons. While improving the look of the kitchen plays a role, many are also looking to increase the value of their home and its energy efficiency. There are two routes to remodeling a kitchen: do-it-yourself or hire a contractor. Both of these paths to kitchen remodeling have their pros and cons, which the homeowner should weigh carefully before deciding. If in doubt, hire out. Do-It-Yourself RemodelingAfter watching home improvement programs all day long, a homeowner might get the notion that she could remodel her kitchen on her own. This will depend greatly on the skill level and the extent of the remodel. Some kitchen projects require just a basic grasp of carpentry and plumbing skills, especially when replacing old fixtures. Replacing sinks and cabinet doors can be done by most. Even tiling the floor or adding a back splash can be accomplished by beginners. For larger projects or those which require the replacement of electrical outlets, a professional contractor can save the homeowner from causing harm to himself or damage to the kitchen. If in doubt, hire out.Finding a Professional ContractorFor those who do not know which end of the hammer is up, a professional contractor is the only way to remodel a kitchen. A contractor can finish the project in much less time than a homeowner trying to fit remodeling in over the course of several weekends. To find a contractor, homeowners should avoid the yellow pages. Professional contractor search services are available on the Internet to find a contractor in the homeowner’s area. Many of these commercially-driven sites are composed of member contractors who pay a fee to be listed. Look for unaffiliated search sites which offer consumer listings and comments of contractors. Professional associations are also a more trustworthy source for looking for kitchen remodelers. Depending on the job, a plumber, electrician or general contractor might be needed for the kitchen remodeling job.Avoiding a Kitchen Remodeling Contractor NightmareJust as with employers who check the background of their job applicants, a homeowner should check the credentials of a contractor. The Better Business Bureau will offer listings of not just their member companies but they have a free database of any complaints lodged against businesses around the United States. Verifying the business practices of a contractor will protect the homeowner from theft and ensure that the job is done properly. If the contractor refuses to release a list of prior homes remodeled for the homeowner to verify, the homeowner should look elsewhere.A renovated kitchen can increase the value of a home, but if the homeowner errs in self-installation or hires a shifty contractor, the final cost will be much more than it should have been had the job been done right the first time.

Are remodeling estimated recommended before starting a home improvement project?

Yes, you should always get an amount on the estimate it is going to cost to remodel your kitchen or any project in the home. That way you are 100% to have the money to do all of it and not just some of it.
