When getting DSL do you need to add a physical firewall between the modem and an existing ethernet lan?

Answer

Yes, it's a great idea to put a physical firewall in when getting DSL or any broadband internet service. Most any home router will do, available for about $30 from any home electronics provider. Broadband internet is "always on", meaning you are still connected to the internet even when you are away from your PC. When you connect to the internet, you are given an IP address, which works a lot like a mailing address. These are "Public" IP addresses; they can be accessed by anyone from anywhere on the internet. A Router will assume your IP address and give you and your computer what is called a "Private" IP address, and can only be accessed by someone in your home, directly connected to the router. This will not encumber your internet service at all. Basically it makes your connection so that you can only communicate with other computers on the internet that you initiate contact with first. You might think you have nothing of value on your computer that anyone would want. And you are probably right. However, most "hacks" come from "script-kiddies", usually adolescent boys who have downloaded a program that will attack any computer with a simple click of the mouse. They usually don't know or don't care who they are attacking. A sort of drive-by shooting on the internet. A router will protect you from this.
