There are different ways to measure how large an earthquake is: * By magnitude. * By damage caused in dollars and by * The loss of human lives. By Magnitude the Great Fort Tejon earthquake of 1857 and the Great San Francisco earthquakes are both recorded as 8.25 on the Richter scale. By damage in 2008 dollars the Great San Francisco earhquake produced about 5.62 billion dollars worth of damage and the loss of an estimated 3,000 lives while it also displaced about 20,000 people. The 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake was only a 6.9 magnitude but produced about 10 billion dollars worth of damage and claimed 63 lives. The 1994 Northridge earthquake racked up at least 20 billion dollars in damages and killed 57 persons, displaced 20,000 and was only a 6.7 magnitude. Better construction, more fire resistant materials, improved emergency management and response has limited the human tragedy but the costs of earthquakes continues to rise. Any future earthquake with a magnitude above 8.0 or greater will be very, very expensive in infrastructure replacement and may produce massive human losses. And it will happen someday.

~ Actually th last major earthquake in the Bay area was the Oakland Quake in 1989, it was a 6.9. But techincally there are actually hundreds of earthquakes every day. Do a little research on the Caldera Valley or Owens valley in the Eastern Sierras near Mammoth Lakes. In the early 90"s there was an event called"The Big Bear / Landers Twin Quakes." It was huge and Big Bear sufferd major structural damage. Many, many earthquakes in California are linked to either the San Andreas Fault line or underground thermal activity connected to volcanic activity. Esp. in the Caldera. That's actually the meaning of Caldera, I believe, underground hot spots.
