Pedro is now expected back on Friday August 1 in Houston. The Mets don't need a fifth starter again until August 9, but Jerry Manuel would like to give his pitcher's an extra day of rest before they begin a string of 23 days without an off-day. Pedro has been in the Dominican Republic on bereavement leave since his father passed away on Wednesday July 23. He hasn't pitched since leaving his July 12 start after 4 innings with another health issue.

Barring another setback, the most likely date for Pedro Martinez's return seems to be Thursday May 29 (at home, against the Dodgers) [Update: there was another setback. Pedro flew to the Dominican Republic to be with his ailing father]. Willie Randolph said that it won't be before that. It may get pushed to Tuesday June 3 (in San Francisco).

Pedro threw a successful 77 pitch minor league session on Monday May 19, and will probably replace Claudio Vargas in the rotation as soon as he's ready. Pedro is scheduled for a bullpen session in front of the Mets coaches in Atlanta this Wednesday (May 21). Pedro will probably start somewhere on Saturday May 24. Some fans were hoping to see that start in the Major Leagues, since the Mets doubleheader on Tuesday May 20 means the Mets will hit Saturday without a starter who has 4 days rest for Saturday. Claudio Vargas only threw 67 pitches Tuesday, and is likely to be the Saturday starter. [Update: Vargas was indeed the starter on Saturday May 24, and earned the win with 7 strong innings].

Pedro was injured on April 1. The original official estimates were "4-6 weeks" but bloggers and reporters immediately interpreted that as "about 6 weeks until he can make rehab starts." While Pedro is already past the 6 week mark, a return to the Major Leagues in May would exceed most people's initial expectations.
