A volcano with the current potential to erupt is an active volcano.

One that has not erupted, and may not erupt again, is dormant.

One that could not, or should not ever erupt again, is extinct.

Most types of volcanoes erupt much more than once. A few examples are Mauna Loa, Mt. St. Helens, Mt. Rainier.

Mauna Loa has an eruptive history that stretches over a million years. There have been thousands of distinct eruptions over the history of this volcano building it to the current dominating height that it is currently on the big island of Hawaii.

Mt. St. Helens erupted historically in 1980, and than erupted again in 2003. This volcano goes through phases of explosive eruptions followed by dome growth and rejuvenation of the summit cone. Once the dome growth has taken place it will often times erupt explosively again.

Mt. Rainier although the current volcano has been active for only about the last 500,000 years. The volcanoes location has been active over the last 40 million years. the most recent cone before modern Mt. Rainier was built up from 2 million to 1 million years ago. The current cone has over 500 different recognized eruptions over the last 500,000 years. The volcano will erupt again in the future, and is on the Decade List of volcanoes that have the potential to inflict massive destruction and human suffering due to their proximity to populated areas.

Volcanoes in general always erupt more than once, and build themselves up over roughly a million years per active edifice. For further information on this subject please refer to the related links section for the detailed geologic history of Mt. Rainier.

When a volcano becomes active again is very hard to predict. Some volcanoes are active very frequently others can go through slumbers of thousands of years, and even fewer can slumber for hundreds of thousands of years. The type of volcano is often times what depends on how frequently they erupt. Hawaiian volcanoes that ar young in age like Kilauea can erupt continuously or every few years. Stratovolcanoes like Mt. Rainier and Mt. St. Helens can erupt every few years all the way up to every few hundred years. Calders style volcanoes can erupt very frequently then go quiet for thousands of years before a major eruption. Supervolcanoes can sleep for hundreds of thousands of years, as is the case for Long Valley and Yellowstone. These volcanoes have not erupted for over 600,000 years, but are still considered very much active.
