∙ 6y agoThe second would be called The Subtle Knife after the book the next book in the series by Phillip Pullman. They aren't currently certain if the second will be filmed or not but due to world-wide success in the box office hopes are high.
This is very debatable at the moment , originally new line planed to film the amber spyglass and the subtle knife together after the first film had finished (sort of like The Lord of the Rings) but due to the controversy, the credit crunch and the fact that new line was taken over by Warner bros.
Producer Deborah Forte expressed optimism that sequels could be made apparently but I don't know ( i hope they are)
Also it is a bit late now to make the sequels due to the fact that Dekota blue (Lyra) has aged 3 years between films, so unless they get a new lyra. We can only wait and see and hope for now. The longer the wait the less chance of the sequels being produced. As the actors aren't getting any younger.
They would have to remake the first one otherwise the second wouldn't make any sense. The second book starts in a different world and in the first movie it was never even hinted that Lyra would leave hers. They skipped to many details to get the story into a 2 hour time span and now cant keep going.
Chances of a sequel to the first movie "The Golden Compass", is unlikely, due to company being bought out, and that the movie did not perform expectations in the box office than originally thought.
However, a remake may be possible in the future, depending on the state of the economy. But at the economy's current state, any sequel to the Golden Compass are slim.

They wanted to make it soon after Golden Compass but there were money problems, and there isn't no plans for the sequel yet.
