Most of us who are actually chefs do it for the pure love of food and the joy of our guests.

That being said; Who wants to retire from the thing that you absolutely love to do?

I hope to die of old age and exhaustion, in the middle of a busy kitchen, and when I do, the staff had better simply move me out of the way and get the rest of the guests served. They can deal with me afterwards! :)

Speaking as a Chef, one maybe retired from the daily operations of the business. But a Chef will always be available for advice, ideas, consultation and more than happy to give his/her comment on a dish, recipe or establishment.

Cooking is not something you learn, its a gift that's inside oneself and through trial and error, hot kitchens and thankless employers is brought to perfection by the love of the trade. Its in our blood, like an artist to canvas is a Chef to a pallet. our way of self expression. Once you commit to the art, you fall in love and remain a Chef forever.

Chefs retire when they choose. They stop working and do something else or live off the money they have made so far.
