When is too old to breed your dog?

I prefer to wait until a female dog has reached her second year before I decide to breed her. That way, she is fully developed and will have expressed any faults she might possess. In general though, you really shouldn't breed your dog at all. If your "purebreed" female has earned some type of championship ranking, maybe then, but, in general, I cannot encourage backyard breeding. I have seen so many failed experimental combinations of dog. Many people don't realize that, other than making an odd-looking dog, you might breed serious mental instability into the puppies (cute babies, but savage adults). If I find a dog worth breeding, I only breed every two years. Age 2, age 4, age 6, and, if the dog is in super-exceptional condition, age 8. And that's where I stop. Most dogs are not worth breeding though. The shelters are full, don't add to the problem.

They should stop breeding about six to seven years old, and should not start until after age two when health clearances can be completed and they are mature enough.

You shouldn't breed in the first place. there are so many animals in need of a home. Why breed when you can save lives?
