When kanji or kana is written vertically is it read from top to bottom starting at the left or right side of the page?

How Kanji/Kana Is Read

This language is read from right to left.

Traditional written Japanese is done in columns which you read from the top to the bottom and from right to left. This is known as tategaki format and imitates traditional Chinese form. Today people often write horizontally from left to right. This style is known as yokogaki and imitates European form.
