Cymbalta is an antidepressant in a group of drugs called selective serotonin and norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors (SSNRIs). Cymbalta works by restoring the balance of certain natural substances in the brain (serotonin and norepinephrine), which helps to improve certain mood problems. Cymbalta is used to treat major depressive disorder and general anxiety disorder. It is also used to treat a chronic pain disorder called fibromyalgia, and to treat pain caused by nerve damage in people with diabeties (diabetic neuropathy). Cymbalta may also be used for other purposes not listed. Important information about Cymbalta Do not take Cymbalta together with thioridazine (Mellaril), or a monoamine oxidase inhibitor (MAOI) such as isocarboxazid (Marplan), phenelzine (Nardil), rasagiline (Azilect), selegiline (Eldepryl, Emsam), or tranylcypromine (Parnate). You must wait at least 14 days after stopping an MAOI before you can take Cymbalta. After you stop taking Cymbalta, you must wait at least 5 days before you start taking an MAOI. You may have thoughts about suicide when you first start taking an antidepressant, especially if you are younger than 24 years old. Your doctor will need to check you at regular visits for at least the first 12 weeks of treatment. Call your doctor at once if you have any new or worsening symptoms such as: mood or behavior changes, anxiety, panic attacks, trouble sleeping, or if you feel impulsive, irritable, agitated, hostile, aggressive, restless, hyperactive (mentally or physically), more depressed, or have thoughts about suicide or hurting yourself. Avoid drinking alcohol while taking Cymbalta. Alcohol may increase the risk of damage to your liver. Cold or allergy medicine, narcotic pain medicine, sleeping pills, muscle relaxers, and medicine for seizures or anxiety can add to sleepiness caused by Cymbalta. Tell your doctor if you regularly use any of these other medicines. Cymbalta can cause side effects that may impair your thinking or reactions. Be careful if you drive or do anything that requires you to be awake and alert. Before taking Cymbalta Do not use Cymbalta together with thioridazine (Mellaril), or an MAO inhibitor such as isocarboxazid (Marplan), tranylcypromine (Parnate), phenelzine (Nardil), rasagiline (Azilect), or selegiline (Eldepryl, Emsam). Serious and sometimes fatal reactions can occur when these medicines are taken with Cymbalta. You must wait at least 14 days after stopping an MAO inhibitor before you can take Cymbalta. After you stop taking Cymbalta, you must wait at least 5 days before you start taking an MAOI. Do not use this medication if you are allergic to duloxetine, or if you have untreated or uncontrolled glacoma Before taking Cymbalta, tell your doctor if you are allergic to any drugs, or if you have: liver or kidney disease; seizures or epilepsy; a bleeding or blood clotting disorder; glaucoma; Bipolar disorder (manic depression); or a history of drug abuse or suicidal thoughts. If you have any of these conditions, you may need a dose adjustment or special tests to safely take Cymbalta. You may have thoughts about suicide when you first start taking an antidepressant, especially if you are younger than 24 years old. Tell your doctor if you have worsening symptoms of depression or suicidal thoughts during the first several weeks of treatment, or whenever your dose is changed. Your family or other caregivers should also be alert to changes in your mood or symptoms. Your doctor will need to check you at regular visits for at least the first 12 weeks of treatment. FDA pregnancy category C. Cymbalta may be harmful to an unborn baby, and may cause problems in a newborn baby if the mother takes the medication late in pregnancy (during the third trimester). Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant during treatment. Cymbalta can pass into breast milk and may harm a nursing baby. Do not use this medication without telling your doctor if you are breast-feeding a baby. Older adults may be more sensitive to the side effects of this medication. Do not give Cymbalta to anyone younger than 18 years old without the advice of a doctor

My withdrawal symptoms to CymbaltaI was on Cymbalta for spinal nerve pain. It really does not matter the reason one is on the drug. The problem is getting off the drug. I began having anxiety attacks which I never had in my life. They would come out of the blue and last anywhere from an hour or so or even the whole day. After withdrawal from the drug I had nightmares, extreme abdominal bloating, severe stomach pain, nausea and a weird headache. Sometimes I could work through it but I ended up in the hospital one night for IV rehydration, an antiemetic and medicine for the headache. These symptoms come and go out of the blue and cause me to be emotionally labile at times. The doctors do not seem to know what to expect. Good luck to you all.

Additional answer/experience:

I have been on Cymbalta since '05 and I am prescribed the highest dose (120mg). I take it for depression, social anxiety disorder, and sciatic nerve pain. I have been on other antidepressants on the past (SSRIs like paxil) and got off them with little/no problems. Cymbalta on the other hand is horrible to come off of. I have terrible manic behavior, mood swings, nightmares, a "spacey" sort of state of mind, terrible anxiety (even though I was taking klonopin), and blood pressure problems. I have withdrawn from opiates before, as well as benzos. I would say Cymbalta withdrawals are quite horrible if it is a cold turkey cut-off, but if it's weened out of your system it's not as bad. Although I'm prescribed 120mg/day, I've only been taking 60mg/day for the past few months and I tapered down to that in only 3 or 4 days with minimal discomfort.

There is whats known as "SSRI/SNRI discontinuation syndrome" and it seems to be a good bit more common/ more severe with SNRIs(Cymbalta, Effexor) vs SSRIs(Paxil, prozac, Zoloft). The symptoms include: dysphoric mood, irritability, agitation, dizziness, sensory disturbances (e.g., paresthesias such as electric shock sensations), anxiety, confusion, headache, lethargy, emotional lability, insomnia, hypomania, tinnitus, and seizures.

i just wanted to add some info. my withdrawals symptoms were like these, and my wonderful doctor helped me SO much by putting me Provigil. it lessened the symptoms to a point of tolerance till they faded away. talk to your doctor.

Hi, I was also prescribed max dose of cymbalta ie 120mg per day. I started to suffer increased heart rate, sweating, nausea, shaking, breathing difficulties. My Dr said it was just anxiety attacks. I then became 'disassociated' and suffered auditory hallucinations. Dr said he knew what it was like to feel nothing. Finally I started to self harm. Dr said Borderline Personality. Stopped cymbalta abruptly because of self harm. All psycho symptomology stopped. Then the mood swings started, talking rubbish, feeling confused, disinterested in life, sleepy all the time, suicide idiology. Now fighting for my job. I'm a police officer or was.

Well, I have been taking Cymbalta for about 5 years in increasing dosages. I have run out of it once between doctors and left it at home when I went on a trip once and went into full on withdrawal both times (went from my 90mg dosage at the time to none at all, very dangerous). I experienced extreme anxiety, complete panic, uncontrollable twitching & shaking in my limbs, nausea, headaches, sleep disturbance and mental fogginess. My doctor told me that I could've ended up in the hospital with seizures! Also, one time I switched to a different medication for my anxiety and experienced panic attacks (I'd never had one previous to that).

One of the most instant issuses of Cymbalta, as with many anti-depressants, is nausea... and sometimes even vomiting due to the nausea. Depending on an indiviuals body chemistry, Cymbalta can also cause dry mouth, fatigue, weight gain, insomnia, decreased appitiate and sweating. One infamous side effect of Cymbalta with younger patients is increased thoughts of suicide, drastically increased heart beat and mania in patients who are being treated for bipolar disorder. Cymbalta helps a lot of people...but it has also hurt many too, enough to create an entire website dedicated to help those who have suffered from the negative side effects of Cymbalta.

If you stop taking Cymbalta altogether there may be some withdrawal symptoms, including insomnia, anorexia, canker sores, strange impulses and sensations, and many more. It is important to contact your prescribing physician about a gradual decline in dosage until you can weine yourself off of Cymbalta.

Can Duloxetinecan aka Cymbalta cause kidney stones?

all I know is that I had never had any kind of kidney problem, but within 2-3 days of taking cymbalta just a couple of times (doc gave me a sample), I had my first kidney stones. I am convinced there was a connection, as Cymbalta does have urinary-related side effects.

What are the side effects of 90mg of Cymbalta compared to 60mg?

the answer to you questions is that people get the same side effects that they do on lower doses. I am a psychiatrist and has used cymbalta at 90mg and 120mg in very select patients. I only increase it over 60mg if the patient is having no side effects. If they start to have side effects at these higher doses, i have them lower the dose back to where they were. Those who were able to tolerate it felt better. Richard
