It's probably because of the Mass Air Flow. They're all faulty on the 2002 Passat. It happend to me, but it should still be under warranty so you won't have to worry about paying for it. Even though having a dealership just look at your car is like $90. But Good Luck!

Well it can mean several things. It can mean the sensors on or around the filters are bad. I have drove with mine on for quit some time with no problems. I went out and purchased a diagnotic tool for about 80.00 and you can reset it.
