When the moon blocks sunlight from reaching a portion of the earth's surfaces it is called a solar eclipse. A solar eclipse can be total or partial. Unlike a lunar eclipse, which can be viewed at night from anywhere on the dark side of the earth, a solar eclipse can be viewed from only a relatively small area of the world. A total solar eclipse happens when the earth, moon, and sun are in a straight line, or as astronomers say, in syzygy, with the moon in the middle and appearing to completely cover the sun but for a soft surround of reflected light behind it. A solar eclipse can happen only at new moon. Not to be confused with a lunar eclipse, which can happen only at full moon. The next partial solar eclipse is on September 13, 2015. The next total solar eclipse is on March 20, 2015.
