For a US Passport, every ten years. If it has lapsed, and 14 years has not yet passed, you can still renew it without too much hassle. If the passport expired more than 14 years ago, you will have to start the procedure all over again from the beginning.

Re-apply several weeks prior to its expiration date. Allow several weeks for processing. It may not take that long but you can't be certain.

If you're an American, you can renew your US passport at any time. There is no requirement for it to still be valid, nor do you have to wait until it's almost expired. However, if you were at least 16 years old, and it was issued less than 15 years ago, you can use the mail-in renewal form DS-82, which saves you some time and money. Bear in mind, as stated above, that it can take some time for the processing to complete, so it's wise to ensure you've renewed it ahead of any planned travel. Don't leave it to the last minute, or you may regret it!

Find more info, including the forms and fees, at the US State Department's travel website, "travel.state.gov".
