When was Australia founded? |
[Edit]
26 January 1788... But it became 'Australia' in 1901.
In 1788 the British Government established a penal colony ( prison ) on the east coast of the Continent called New Holland . The name of the colony was New South Wales .
The term ' Australia ' was first used for the eastern half of New Holland in approx. 1840
In 1868 the name of New Holland was changed to Australia . That meant only that the land mass was called Australia - Australia as a Nation did not then exist .
Even in 1901 the Commonwealth of Australia was still considered to be a British Colony .
From 1931 the Commonwealth of Australia became an autonomous unit within the British Nation and was known as a British Dominion .
It was in 1986 that the Australia Act declared Australia to be a Sovereign Independent and Federal Nation .
