Saint Peter was one of the original apostles. He was originally a fisherman named Simon. He denied that he knew Jesus when Jesus' enemies questioned him. He was one of the apostles who spread Christianity internationally. He wrote letters that are now part of the New Testament. He was crucified. Catholics believe that he was the first pope. "Peter" means "rock". Jesus said that "on this rock I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it"

Peter and his brother Andrew were one of the first ones to be chosen as a disciple.

Peter was chosen as he fished on the Sea of Galilee.

== 1And it came to pass, that, as the people pressed upon him to hear the word of God, he stood by the lake of Gennesaret, 2And saw two ships standing by the lake: but the fishermen were gone out of them, and were washing their nets. 3And he entered into one of the ships, which was Simon's, and prayed him that he would thrust out a little from the land. And he sat down, and taught the people out of the ship. 4Now when he had left speaking, he said unto Simon, Launch out into the deep, and let down your nets for a draught. 5And Simon answering said unto him, Master, we have toiled all the night, and have taken nothing: nevertheless at thy word I will let down the net. 6And when they had this done, they inclosed a great multitude of fishes: and their net brake. 7And they beckoned unto their partners, which were in the other ship, that they should come and help them. And they came, and filled both the ships, so that they began to sink. 8When Simon Peter saw it, he fell down at Jesus' knees, saying, Depart from me; for I am a sinful man, O Lord. 9For he was astonished, and all that were with him, at the draught of the fishes which they had taken: 10And so was also James, and John, the sons of Zebedee, which were partners with Simon. And Jesus said unto Simon, Fear not; from henceforth thou shalt catch men. 11And when they had brought their ships to land, they forsook all, and followed him.

There is not one story of Saint Peter, but several.

  1. First of all, in Paul's Epistles, he is a pillar of the Church in Jerusalem, probably second to James, brother of Christ. Paul looks to James as a leader, but treats Peter as an equal.
  2. In Mark's Gospel, Peter is a bumbling disciple who does not seem to understand. Famously, he was the disciple who identified Jesus with the hoped-for Messiah, and later denied Jesus three times. He is one of the three most prominent of the disciples, and their names coincide with the three pillars of the Jerusalem Church in Paul's epistles. He was a fisherman before Jesus called him.
  3. In Matthew's Gospel, he is clearly the leader of the disciples, chosen by Jesus to lead his church (although this could be a later addition to the Gospel), and can even walk on water.
  4. Only in John's Gospel is Peter not the first disciple whom Jesus meets. He is always outperformed and outrun by a mysterious 'disciple whom Jesus loved' (sometimes thought to have been John). Jesus becomes exasperated with Peter when he asks, three times, whether Peter loves him, but Peter can only offer brotherly love, not unconditional love (agape). The gospel even ends with Jesus asking Peter what is it to him what the beloved disciple does.
  5. In Acts of the Apostles, Peter is compared, event by event and miracle by miracle, with the Apostle Paul. This time, the author portrays Peter as the more worthy apostle.
  6. At this stage, there is no suggestion that Peter ever went to Rome or was executed there. A second-century tradition has Peter go to Rome to lead the church there, but he was executed by Nero around 65 CE. This tradition is essential for the Catholic Church's claim that the popes are direct successors to Peter.
  7. Catholic tradition says that Peter was the first bishop of Rome and that he appointed his successor as bishop of Rome, with a continuous succession of bishops down to the present day. However, Francis A. Sullivan SJ (From Apostles to Bishops) says that the Catholic position remains far from easy to establish. This is an acknowledgement that even if Peter did visit Rome, he does not appear to have led the church there, nor appointed a bishop.
