The Renaissance (from French Renaissance, meaning "rebirth) was a cultural movement that occurred roughly from the 14th to the 17th century, beginning inItaly in the late Middle Ages and later spreading to the rest of Europe. The term is also used to refer to the historic era, but since the changes of the Renaissance were not uniform, this is a very general use of the term.
Since the Renaissance took place all over Europe, and not just in one city in one country it is hard to pinpoint an exact date or even a year. A hundred years ago one might have considered the 1500's to be the start of Renaissance now it is considered the 1300's. The period before Renaissance was the Late Gothic which blended into and overlapped with the Early Renaissance in the 14th century.
