In 1902-1903, the first filmmaker to utilize editing was Edwin Porter who combined news reel footage of firemen with a scene set inside a burning house, making it the first film to originate from multiple reels. There may have been earlier lost examples in other countries, but I think 1902 is the answer you are looking for.
