Physicist Enrico Fermi created the first sustained Nuclear Fission reaction in a lab in Chicago (known as Chicago Pile 1) on December 2, 1942, almost a year after the United States entered WWII. Though work on nuclear fission had been ongoing, it was the real possibility of the Nazis gaining nuclear weapons capability from their own experiments that led to Einstein adding his name to the now famous letter sent to Roosevelt warning of the Nazi danger, and which further implored that the United States begin its own work. Funding as a result of the response to the Nazi threat is what helped Fermi's own experiment and success.

His work led to the initial designs for the earliest reactor at Hanford, Washington, andalso aided Admiral Hyman Rickover in his successful quest to bring Nuclear Power to the U.S. Navy. It was Rickover and his design team that successfully designed and integrated a reactor unit small enough and safe enough designed to produce electricity and propulsion power for the first nuclear submarine, the USS Nautilus. Nautilus sealed Nuclear Power as a viable energy source when it circumnavigated the globe without refueling, a feat then unheard of. Today, our ships and submarines that are nuclear powered are limited only by the crew as to its range and length of time they can stay at sea.

Nuclear Power has become a political Propaganda tool by those who understand it the least, but do not care about whether it can be safely used. The Navy has shown for almost 50 years that it can be. It is because of the use of Nuclear Power as a political tool that many new reactor plants were scrubbed, and more coal and oil plants were built which now are partially blamed for adding to greenhouse gases in our atmosphere.

Nuclear energy was invented many years ago to help provide electricity, and to help develop powerful weapons. Nuclear power is still used today.
