R12 was in use up until the 90's when R134A was introduced. I believe R12 was phased out at the end of 94, And R134A took it's place from 95 on. I hope that's the answer you're looking for.

How can you tell if an older car has R-12 or R-134 in it?

R12 was banned in 1995. Any vehicle from 1994 back will have R12. Any vehicle from 1996 to today will have R134, R134a, etc. A 1995 may have R12 or R134. Any car that has been retrofitted, even if it is older then 1994 may not have R12. If it was retrofitted it should have a label stating this.

How much free-on in a 1996 Monte Carlo 3.1?

FREON (R12) was banned beginning in 1996. Your vehicle contains R134, and as to how much. I suggest you seek a professional to repair the leak and recharge the system, as it is illegal to install refrigerant without repairing the leak.FREON (R12) was banned beginning in 1996. How much freon does a home air conditioner need?

How do you know if r12 freon is in vehicle?

If if it a 1995 or older then it came with R12 installed. 1996 can be R12 or R134. 1997 up, it has R134/R134a. If you suspect it had R12 look for a label somewhere on the A/C unit signifying it has been converted. If you find it has R12 and is leaking and needs repairing, after the leak is repaired, convert it to R134a. R12 is far too expensive to use.
