When did the Jehovah's Witnesses start?

The name 'Jehovah's Witnesses' was adopted in 1931 proposed by Joseph Franklin Rutherford the second official president of the Watchtower Bible and Tract Society. Before then the followers of the Watchtower were known as the (International) Bible students. The Bible students were founded by a man named Charles Taze Russell, the first official president of the Watchtower and Tract Society, in 1879.

At Isaiah 43:10,11, God referres to his followers as his "witnesses," so in 1931, they adopted the scriptural name "Jehovah's Witnesses."

Jehovah's Witnesses believe that their religion is not a new one, but a rebirth of the ancient biblical form of worship.

After the first president of the Watch Tower Bible and Tract Society, Inc., died in 1916, Joseph Rutherford had the the by-laws changed, which actually led to the formation of what became the "Jehovah's Witnesses" organization. By 1930, Most of the earlier Bible Students movement had rejected Rutherford's new oganization and his new gospel. In 1931, in order to distinguish his new organization from the old Bible Students movement, Rutherford had his new organization named "Jehovah's Witnesses."
