The United Kingdom was formed in 1707 when England and Scotland united their parliments. Both countries had shared a monarch since 1603 when King James VI of Scotland became King James I of England. At this period in time Wales was also considered a part of England (this is the reason that they are not represented on the Union Flag). It wasn't until 1800 that Ireland joined the union and in 1922 what is now called the Republic of Ireland withdrew from the union leaving Northern Ireland still in the union. Currently the UK consists of England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland and the official name of the UK is The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland.

The group of islands off the west coast of Europe is known as the British Isles. The two largest islands are Great Britainand an island split into Northern Ireland in the North (sometimes called Ulster) and the indepndent Republic of Ireland (Eire) in the south. In 1927 an act was passed that the new United Kingdom would consist of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, which it has remained to this day. Incidently, the word 'Great' in Great Britain has nothing to do with the power of t nation or anything jingoistic or patriotic. Great Britain is an old title used to differentiate it from 'Little Britain' - the region in Northern France that is, in French, called Bretagne, or, as we in the UK say, Brittany. Scotland and England united to form Great Britain in 1707. Great Britain and Ireland united to form the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland in 1801.
