The Washington Monument, at 555 feet and 5 1/8 inches, is the tallest monument in Washington D.C. it was originally designed by Robert Mills to house statues of Washington and other American greats. In a ceremony on July 4, 1848, the cornerstone was laid. Construction continued until it was stopped in 1858 due to a lack of funding. For 18 years, it stood unfinished until President Ulysses S. Grant approved an act in 1876, authorizing government to finish it. Lt. Col. THomas Casey of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers took control in 1878, simplified Mills' original design, and continued the project. Finally, the monument was dedicated on February 21, 1885.
