There is some controversy about the idea that the decimal system was invented in India. This should be no surprise because people like to argue over things like this.
The decimal system may have originated in the Gupta Empire.
Arguably, any peoples that used to count on their fingers used the decimal system.
Note:
Do not confuse the decimal system with the Arabic numeral system!
Both Ancient Romans and Arabs had decimal systems; but Roman numerals were hopeless for mathematics and accounting; whereas Arabic numerals are used universally today.

The decimal system was introduced by the Indian mathematician Aryabhata in the 5th century. He developed it as a way to represent numbers using the base 10 system, which is now commonly used worldwide.
