According to the Bureau of Engraving and Printing the first $2 notes (called United States Notes or "Legal Tenders") were issued by the Federal Government in 1862 and featured a portrait of the first Secretary of the Treasury, Alexander Hamilton (1789-1795).

Currently, the two dollar bill features a portrait of Thomas Jefferson.

The first $2 bills were red-seal United States Notes printed in 1862.

The denomination has been printed irregularly since that time. Up till 1963 the majority were all US Notes. In 1976 the first green-seal $2 Federal Reserve Notes were printed, and those are the only variety made today.

While demand for $2 bills is low it's never been zero, and some parts of the country have recently seen very slight increases in use. The denomination has never been discontinued; as of this writing there have been printings with the 2003, 2009, and 2013 series dates.
